 Techemet Wet LaboratoryProject Scope:
The renovation encompasses:

  • Wet testing laboratories, sample preparation rooms, dry weight rooms, and supporting spaces.
  • Laboratory-grade exhaust and ventilation systems, including multiple dedicated exhaust fans and silencer systems.
  • Humidification systems for controlled lab environments.
  • Specialized plumbing systems for lab operations, including acid-resistant drainage, lab water, and gas piping.
  • Electrical distribution upgrades to serve high-demand laboratory equipment.

Design Challenges:

  • Chemical Process Ventilation: Integration of multiple Greenheck exhaust fans and acid digestion fume hoods with precise airflow and control sequences.
  • Humidity and Temperature Control: Installation of Condair EL Series humidifiers with precise load calculations for controlled environments.
  • Equipment Coordination: Placement and routing of rooftop units (including owner pre-purchased RTU-2) and duct systems while maintaining code-required clearances and noise control via Vibro-Acoustics silencers.
  • Plumbing Coordination: Routing acid waste, DI/RO water, and natural gas piping within tight ceiling and chase spaces.

Forensic and Problem-Solving Aspects:

  • Used advanced 3D coordination to integrate ductwork, piping, and electrical systems within limited overhead space.
  • Conducted detailed ventilation balancing strategies to meet laboratory air change requirements while minimizing energy use.
  • Developed sequences of operation for integration with building automation and safety interlocks (including fire alarm tie-ins and sash position sensors for fume hoods).

Specific Mechanical Systems:

  • Multiple dedicated exhaust fans (Greenheck SQ and USF series) sized from 570 CFM to 2,500 CFM.
  • Silencers to meet NC levels in sensitive lab areas.
  • Condair EL Series humidifier (30 lbs/hr capacity) with BACnet MSTP integration.
  • Owner-provided Trane TSJ120A4S RTU with economizer, multi-stage cooling, and electric heat.

Specific Electrical Systems:

  • Power distribution upgrades to support HVAC, lab equipment, and specialized exhaust/ventilation.
  • Emergency power-off (EPO) integration for safety.
  • Dedicated circuits for high-demand process equipment.

Specialized Plumbing Systems:

  • Acid-resistant waste piping and venting.
  • RO/DI water systems.
  • Backflow prevention and pressure regulation.
